Site Transformers

Site transformers are usually chosen on two things first: the input supply you’ve got and whether you need a fixed or portable unit for the job. A 240v to 110v transformer suits most site tool use, while a 110v step down transformer with sockets gives you a cleaner plug-in setup and less faffing with adaptors. If it’s going to be moved about, weight and lead length matter more than the headline rating, because the heavy units are the ones that get left in the van.

For the Trade

Start with the space you’ve got and how the unit will be used. That usually rules out half the options before you look at anything else. A compact portable site transformer makes sense where access is tight or it needs shifting between areas. A heavier unit is the better call if it’s staying put and taking more load through the day. The 240v to 110v transformer is still the common pick for most tool work, but the supply matters just as much as the layout. A unit with sockets saves you carrying extra kit, though it can be bulkier. A 110v step down transformer with RCD protection is worth the extra spend when the job calls for that added control.

Site Transformer Types and Layouts

A plain site transformer suits the usual 240v to 110v step-down work when you want a straightforward supply for tools. Site transformers 110v with sockets are the cleaner pick if you need to plug in more than one lead without extra adaptors hanging off it.

A site transformer with rcd is worth the extra cost where the kit gets moved about or shared. You give up a bit of simplicity, and you’ll usually pay for the added protection. For power tools, keep it with the Power Distribution & Circuit Protection range if you’re matching the transformer to the rest of the board and protection gear.

What to Check Before You Buy

When you’re picking site transformers, start with the load and how you’re handling it. Voltage is only part of the job.

A lighter portable site transformer suits work that moves round the site. The trade-off is usually fewer sockets and less tolerance for sitting in one place all day.

A heavier 110v transformer makes more sense when it stays put and sees repeated use. If the spec is already pointing you towards extra protection, look at RCBOs or MCBs alongside the unit, rather than trying to make one box cover everything.

Useful Alongside Site Transformers

Once you’ve picked the site transformers, the next call is what sits around them on the job. If the unit is going into a fixed setup, sort the matching panel or enclosure at the same time so you’re not back to it later.

If the transformer’s being moved about, storage and cable management matter just as much as the box itself. Loose leads and battered plugs are what usually cause call-backs.

Keep an eye on the surrounding protection too. If the job needs a cleaner distribution point, that’s where the rest of the power distribution kit earns its keep.
