Weed control starts with the job in front of you - suppression under gravel, decking or planting, or active growth that needs treatment first. Membrane and fabric suit barrier work, while weed killer is the better call when you need to clear growth before you cover it. Heavier grades matter where the cover stays exposed or gets walked on, because thin sheet tears fast and costs you time later.

Start with the space you’ve got and how long it needs to stay down, then the choice gets clearer. Tight access, awkward edges and small beds usually point you one way. Bigger open runs need something that lays flat and stays put. If you’re stopping regrowth, weed membrane or weed control fabric is usually the call. If live growth is still there, weed killer may need to come first. The sheet that shifts or tears is the one that gets called back, so weight and handling matter more than the label.
For most jobs, the first split is between weed killer and barrier products. Weed killer suits live growth you need to knock back now, but you’ll still need follow-up if the ground stays open.
Weed control fabric and weed membrane are the usual pick where you want suppression under a finish. Fabric is easier to handle and cut. Heavier membrane tends to stay put better and gives you more confidence on rougher ground. In Maintenance & Care, that’s usually the decision point - treatment for active growth, or a membrane for longer-term control.
The first call is whether you’re dealing with live growth or stopping it coming through a finished area. If it’s active, weed killer is the quick answer. If you’re covering ground, weed control fabric or membrane is what you’ll usually price up.
Go heavier where the surface takes more abuse. Go thinner where handling matters more than long-term resistance. On bigger runs, flatter products save time. Cut-outs and awkward edges are where cheaper material starts to get fiddly.
If you’re clearing waste as well, Garden Bags usually come into the job at the same time. Compost is the next call when the site needs reworking after treatment.
Once you’ve picked the weed control, the next call is what sits around it. If the job needs a finished edge, sort the surrounding finish at the same time so you’re not lifting it back up later.
On bigger areas, access and waste come next. Rolls, offcuts and spoil need somewhere to go, so garden bags or compost often go in the same order. For tidy borders and planted runs, plant and tree ties usually get picked alongside it because the same area often needs securing as well as suppressing.
