Manual Handling

46 products

Manual handling comes down to what you’re moving, how far, and how often. A sack truck suits stacked loads and stairs better than a flatbed, while dollies and trolleys work better when the load is awkward, low, or needs shifting across a level floor. The trade-off is simple: more capacity and stability often means more bulk to store and turn, so you choose the kit that saves effort without getting in the way on the job.

For the Trade

Start with the space you’ve got and how the load actually moves, then the rest of the spec usually sorts itself out. In manual handling, compact kit that turns cleanly is worth more than a heavier frame that’s awkward in tight aisles or narrow stores. If you’re shifting goods over a short run, handling and turning circle matter more than finish. If the job repeats all day, wheel quality and frame stability are usually what you notice first. Accessories come after that. They help, but they won’t fix the wrong layout.

Dollies & Trolleys

Dollies & Trolleys suit loads that sit low and need to move flat, not tipped back. They give you control and easy manoeuvrability where carrying height is not the issue.

A lighter board or crate load will run smoothly on a dolly. A heavier frame brings more stability when the load is awkward or the floor is uneven.

Compact units are easier to store and turn, but they give you less forgiveness on rough ground. For the narrower buy within this range, see Dollies & Trolleys.

Flatbed Trolleys

If the load stays flat and you want a broad deck rather than a cradle, Flatbed Trolleys are the one to look at. They suit boxes, tubs and mixed goods that need a stable base. A sack truck is the better call once the load needs to sit upright or be tipped back.

The trade-off is size and turning room. A flatbed carries awkward shapes well, but it can be clumsy through narrow access or over rough ground. The jobs that cause grief are the ones where the load overhangs the deck and shifts on the first corner.

Packaging

Packaging is the bit you pick when the load needs containing, not just moving. If you are keeping parts together, stopping loose items shifting, or sending mixed goods out in one piece, Packaging earns its keep.

It is a different call from dollies or flatbeds. Those move the load. Packaging keeps it together before it goes anywhere. The usual mistake is blaming the lift when the real problem is poor containment.

Sack Trucks

A sack truck is the one you pick when the load needs tipping back and moving on two wheels rather than sitting flat. You’re usually choosing between frame shape, toe plate size and wheel type, because that changes how it behaves with stacked goods, white goods or awkward parcels.

A lighter truck is easier to handle in and out of vans. A heavier frame gives you more confidence on rough ground and with taller loads. If the job is mostly level runs with broad, low items, manual handling trolleys or flatbeds usually make more sense.

Storage Boxes

Storage boxes come into their own when the job is keeping small parts together rather than shifting one heavy load. The choice usually comes down to size, stackability, and whether you need lids that stay put in transit or open fronts for quicker access.

A box that is too small wastes time repacking. One that is too big gets overfilled and awkward to carry. That is where manual handling starts to slip. Loose contents and poor stacking cause most of the hassle. If you are moving mixed kit between jobs, boxes are the neater option.

What to Check Before You Buy

Start with the job in front of you. A short run across a clear floor needs different manual handling equipment from repeated trips through narrow aisles. If the load has to stay contained on the way out, that changes the choice again.

Go lighter where access is tight and the load is awkward rather than heavy. Choose heavier kit when stability matters or the route is rougher. You lose some ease of handling, but it sits better under load.

If the job is more about keeping stock together than shifting it, Shelving & Storage is the spend. Where the load is going straight into an office or back-of-house area, Office Furniture may be the next buy, not more moving kit.

Useful Alongside Manual Handling

Once you’ve picked the handling kit, the next call is what keeps the load and the work area under control. If you’re moving mixed parts or loose fixings, packaging and storage boxes keep items together and cut the mess that leads to delays and missing stock.

For goods that need to stay put between trips, shelving and storage is the cleaner answer. Office furniture only comes into play when you’re setting up a work area rather than moving materials. The handling gear is only half the job if everything still ends up scattered or awkward to store.
